Obituary

Selma Irene (Stephenson) Varley, age 91, passed from this life on October 22, 2025. She was born February 2, 1934 to Raymond T. Stephenson and Mary Duer Stephenson on their farm in Lenora, Oklahoma. She was raised under mother Mary's iron fist.  She later relate her "humiliation" as a child because she was made to pull the plow in the garden, "like a mule". She was definitely a "daddy's" girl but had the upmost respect for her hard-working mother, which influenced Selma's work ethics. She was an only child but grew up with numerous cousins. Her cousin Dennis Meyer, whom was only 2 weeks older was a close friend of Selma's. There were numerous stories and shenanigans told, like the time Dennis hung her upside down from the clothesline.

Selma attended multiple elementary country schools following wherever mother Mary was teaching, before entering Taloga schools where she was the proud graduate of the class of 1952. The "52 Models" stayed in touch and gathered for many reunions, up until their 67th   in 2019.

Selma married Forrest Dean "Mike" Stuteville, April 13, 1952, and she soon became the best hired hand on their farm 10 miles east of Seiling. She kept busy milking cows, building fence, bucking hay, and raising 2 children. Larry Max, born October,6 1953 and Lynn Gay, born July 14, 1957.

Selma was always a hard worker. After the divorce from Mike and leaving the farm, Selma worked numerous jobs including waitressing for the Bench's at the sales barn, and the Shamrock Café, and took pride in working at the Seiling Nursing home where she lovingly cared for all the grandmas and grandpas as if they were her own. She then begin working at Sander's Trucking company as a dispatcher where she mothered, or as she would say "babysat" her boys. She watched over them as if they were her sons and made sure each one of them got home safely at night before she would allow herself to go to bed.  While working for the trucking company she and longtime friend Beverly Autry opened their hobby job, a florist shop on main street of Seiling. known as "The Rainbow's End".

On September 18th, 1972 she married Glenn Varley. Shortly after their marriage Glenn was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was not expected to survive 2 years, but as she would refer to him as the "hardheaded cowboy that never quit" she was his caregiver for 34 years. During that time, mother Mary also became sick with cancer and Selma moved her into her home to care for her, until her death.

Selma was a longtime member of the Methodist Church, where she would assist with Lions Club and church dinners. In the later years she was a supporter of Bill and Joy Sanders new Crossroads Community Church and was proud of, as she would say "their little church".  "Granny Selma" was a huge part of her grandchildren and great grand children's lives. She had a special place in her heart for her "Chady Boy" and was always there for any of her family when needed.

Selma loved playing cards and games with family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles, bead work, and other crafts. She was quick witted, loved to tease, and give anyone that would listen, advice!

She is survived by her 2 children Larry Stuteville and Johanna of Weatherford, daughter Lynn and son-in-law Joey Sciambia of Sugarland Texas, 2 Grandchildren Chad Stuteville and Jessica of Seiling, and Kathy Stuteville-Riggs and husband Tommy, of Weatherford. 6 great grandchildren; Talynn, Ashton, and Brayden Stuteville, Maddox, and Korbin Riggs, and Tori Flowers, along with 5 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Selma has always put others before herself and often said her life was nothing special to talk about, but those of us that knew her, know she was selfless and taught us to do the right thing. Although, she is not physically with us her life lessons and memories will forever have an impact on our lives.

Funeral Services will be held Monday October 27th, at 2:00 p.m. at the One Life Church (formerly the Methodist Church) of Seiling. Burial will follow at Brumfield Cemetery. Dinner will be served afterwards at the Seiling Senior Citizens building.
