IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Curtis (Red)
Lyon
September 23, 1962 – June 5, 2025
Curtis (Red) Lee Lyon was born on September 23, 1962, at Hutchinson, KS, to Garry and Amelia Lyon. Red entered his eternal home on June 5, 2025, surrounded by his family and he was welcomed into Heaven by his father Garry.
Red attended school at Elkhart, KS; Vici, OK; and finished his education at Seiling School graduating with the class of 1981. Red began his working career at an early age as his dad believed that the boys needed to work to save money for motorcycles. Garry started them with collecting beer cans and bottles at the local beer joints, then would haul them to Woodward to cash in their collection of cans. The next entrepreneurship job the boys had was mowing and weed eating lawns, even though they were not big enough to hold the weed eater. Red held a number of jobs throughout his life in high school. He worked at the gas station, he was a welder's helper for Don Fosdick, worked for Doc Decker at the vet clinic, and worked at the Shamrock station for Marc Clayton. He then began working at Seiling Public School in the maintenance department and as a bus driver while also working at the hospital in the maintenance department. After his kids graduated and didn't need to be kept in line, he began his career as a truck driver in the oil field working for Hamm and Phillips, Cudd, and Gore Nitrogen.
Red's favorite thing was being a dad to his daughters Brandy, Margie, and Angie. He was the one that taught them to drive yet complained about their driving. He was beyond proud to be a girl dad, but they were quickly replaced when the grandkids began to arrive. He was known as Papa or Papa Red and in his eyes, they were perfect angels. Then came along the great grandkids and life was made. He made sure to give each great grandkid their own nickname and that is what he would call them.
Red's favorite hobbies were fishing, hunting, woodworking, and metal work. He enjoyed spending time at Enid Vo-Tech learning metal work and 3D printing. In his woodworking, he enjoyed making things for those that he loved.
Red found Jesus Christ while he was at Forgotten Ministries. That is where he earned his sobriety and was able to help lead others to Christ. He enjoyed doing missions, neighborhood outreach, and all the wonderful things that the ministry was involved in.
Red was a hard worker, a loving father, and papa. He was the kind of person that would give you his shirt off his back and expect nothing in return.
Red is survived by his mother, Amelia Lyon; his children, Brandy Johnson and husband Jeremy, Margie Whetstone and husband Mark, and Angie VanHooser and husband Kelly. He also leaves behind grandkids; Ivey and Shaun, Emma and Josiah, Kolten and Katelyn, Kiya and Holden, Khyler and Ty, Robert, Piper, and Paicey: great grandkids; Aurora, Rowyn, Ryder, Sawyer, Saylor, Lakyn, and Bauer, the mother of his children Lavera Lyon, and his siblings; Richard and Karen Lyon and Teresa and Shane Sander.
Red was preceded in death by his father Garry Lyon, grandson Thatcher VanHooser, grandparents: Merle and Emma Harris and Wilbur (Willie) and Vera Lyon.
Red will be deeply missed by his family, but his onery spirit will live on in all of them as they carry him forever in their hearts.
Memorials can be made to the Seiling Fire Department or Seiling Community Ambulance Service. Red was proud to be the son of a fireman, and his grandson is carrying on the tradition along with his daughter as part of the local ambulance crew.
