James Jacob Smith, 85 year old resident of Mutual, OK, passed from this life on May 16, 2018. He was born on May 31, 1932 to James Wilton and Tabitha May (Castor) Smith in Mangum, OK. The family lived in Mangum until they moved west of Mutual, OK when James was around the age of 6 or 7 where the family remained until James graduated high school in 1951. In 1952, James joined the Air Force where he would ultimately attain the rank of Sergeant 5
th
Class as a technician for radar and fighter wings. On December 27
th
, 1953, James was united in marriage with Georgia Lee Craighead. To this union was born a son, James Lee, and two daughters, Sandra Pauline and Sherri Lynn, and they later adopted Peter Jason in 1978. The family resided in Harrisonville, MO and Yuma, AZ while James was still in the Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1956. James worked at Phillips 66 while living in Bartlesville for a short time, but he would find his career with the U.S. Postal Service in Bartlesville. He later purchased Beltone Hearing Aid Service in Woodward and operated it for several years until returning to the Postal Service where he worked until he retired. He lived in Woodward for a time until he moved North of Mutual in 1984, before he finally moved east of Mutual in 2011.
James loved cattle, horses, and cowboying, so this meant he also loved to fish and hunt. James enjoyed golf and playing and coaching baseball. But the most important thing in James's life was his time spent with his family. One such thing he would do to involve his family in his life was to take his dad to watch his grandson play baseball. James's love for family was so great that he felt great honor in being called Dad, Grandpa, and Papa James.
James was a member of the National Rifle Association, Woodward American Legion Post 19, and the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association. James received Quilts of Valor. James dedicated his heart to Jesus Christ in 1972 at Bartlesville First Assembly of God (now the Spirit Chuch) and later became a member of Woodward Assembly of God. While there he taught Sunday School classes (he loved his Junior boys class), building props for plays and the youth of the church, and he would drive a bus.
James is preceded in death by his parents James Wilton and Tabitha May Smith; brother Samuel Alexander Smith; wife Georgia Lee Smith; daughter Sandra Pauline Smith; and adopted son Peter Jason Smith.
Remembering James's memory are his son James Lee Smith and wife Eldena of Mutual, OK; daughter Rev.
