Obituary

Leonard Abraham Troyer was born on July 6, 1940, in Shickley, NE to parents Abraham and Emma Troyer.  He passed from this life on February 8, 2022, at his new home in Seiling, OK at the age of 81 years, 7 months, and 2 days.

Leonard grew up in Nebraska and Indiana graduating from Shickley High School.  He was later married in Geneva, NE and this union two children, Tim and Niki Troyer were born.  The family made their home in Wolbach, NE.  Leonard worked as a horse trainer, and this life led him to travel and make his home in many places across Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.

Leonard loved to drive, so he went all over the United States for horse and rodeo activities.  He loved the cowboy channel, watching old westerns, country music, and talking on his phone and iPad to keep in touch with family and friends.  He always preferred to "try" to fix things himself and would often haul broken machinery and parts to his shop to be rebuilt.  He was very crafty with leather and horse equipment.  Leonard, and one of his good friends, Jim Collins, worked to create custom bits for horses that are highly sought after in horse training circles.  Leonard had a reputation for turning the "problem" horses into good ones.  Leonard's facilities were always open to friends and family to bring their horses in, and he spent many hours on the phone giving advice on training as well.  He could talk you through any issue, and if he couldn't, he would go his own way and travel to the horse. Leonard also enjoyed playing cards with family and tinkering in the shop.

Leonard was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA), Cutting Horse Association of Nebraska (CHAN), Kansas Cutting Horse Association (KCHA), and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).  He received many trophies and awards while showing cutting horses, and helped many, many more young people achieve success in 4H and rodeo.  Leonard was also a member of the Shickley Mennonite Church.

In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Loretta Troyer, Glen Troyer, Lester Troyer, Ivan Troyer, Herald Troyer, Mary Erb-Armfield, Jim Troyer, and Dorothy Schlegal.

Left to carry his legacy are his children, Tim Troyer and wife Rebecca of Whiteville, NC, and Niki Troyer and Angela Teixeira of Midwest City, OK, and Audry Lee of Clay Center, KS; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters, Betty Miller, Violet Stutzman, and Eunice Stutzman, all of Milford, NE, as well as many nieces and nephews.  Leonard is also survived by many other family and friends too countless to list, but whose lives were enormously impacted by his kindness and generosity.  He will be deeply and dearly missed.

Memorial Services will be held at the Salem Mennonite Church (820 Road V) in Shickley, NE on Friday, February 18, 2022 at 10:00 A.M.  A dinner will follow the services.
