Phil Hicks, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and skilled craftsman, passed away on August 19, 2023, at the age of 79 in Seiling, Oklahoma. He was born on June 24, 1944, in Altadena, California, to Nels Eugene Hicks and Winona Ruth (Harker) Hicks. Phil's life was a testament to passion, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to his craft.
Phil's journey through life was defined by his numerous interests and talents. He was a lineman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power before moving his family to Salida, Colorado in 1981. There he embarked on a career as the maintenance manager for Monarch Ski Area, where his dedication and skills ensured the smooth operation of the ski resort, leaving a lasting impact on both colleagues and visitors alike.
Upon retirement from Monarch in 2009, Phil moved to Marysville, Kansas with his father. There Phil continued to pursue his many hobbies and cared for his father until his passing. In 2022, he moved to Seiling, Oklahoma to be closer to family.
Phil possessed a remarkable talent for woodworking that showcased his attention to detail and love for the craft. His stained-glass works illuminated spaces with vibrant colors, his pen-making demonstrated precision and elegance, and his leatherwork captured the essence of both functionality and artistry.
His creativity extended to his hobbies as well. An avid amateur radio enthusiast, he connected with others around the world though his passion for communication and technology. He also found joy in constructing intricate model trains and railroads, bringing miniature worlds to life with meticulous care.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Nels Eugene Hicks and Winona Ruth Hicks. He is survived by his son Michael Hicks of Canon City, CO, and daughter Shawn Gore and her husband Gary of Seiling, OK. Phil's spirit will live on through his cherished grandchildren: Jonathan Hicks and his wife Melissa of West Virginia, Savannah Hicks of Midwest City, OK, and Isabella Hicks of Canon City, CO; Aaron Gore and his wife Stacy of Seiling, OK, Garrett Gore and his wife Alma of Duncan, OK, and Jacob Gore and his wife Madison of Oklahoma City, OK. His great-grandchildren, Jocy Gore and Marlee Gore will carry his memory forward as well.
Phil Hicks touched the lives of many with his talents and wit. He will be remembered for his unwavering passion for craftsmanship and his many hobbies. As we say goodbye to this remarkable individual, let us celebrate the legacy he leaves behind and find solace in the cherished memories he bestowed upon us all.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 2:00 pm in the Redinger Funeral Home Chapel, Seiling, Oklahoma. Graveside Services will be Friday, August 25, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Blue Rapids, Kansas.
