Obituary

Richard Lloyd Smith was born on November 2, 1957 to Melvin Lee and Norma Joan (Black) Smith. Richard was one of five children that were born to Melvin and Norma. He is a 4 th generation descendant of Cheyenne Chief Black Kettle. Richard grew up in Seiling, Oklahoma, attending Seiling Public Schools. When Richard was in high school, the family moved out to Fonda, but Richard would still graduate at Seiling with the Class of 76.

After high school, Richard completed a semester at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma before entering the workforce. He later returned to SWOSU in 1993 and attained a Bachelor of Science with a degree in Healthcare Administration in 2000.

On February 1, 1980, Richard was united in marriage with Tami Renee Murray in a ceremony that was officiated by the former Oklahoma Highway Patrolman, Bob Thomas. This past February, Richard and Tami celebrated their 40 th wedding anniversary. Following their marriage, Richard and Tami lived in the Chester area before settling in Fonda, where they resided for 40 years until Richard's passing. Richard and Tami were blessed with three children, sons Richard "Ric" Lloyd Smith, II and Michael DeBrae, and daughter Katrina Ranel. Ric continues to live in the Fonda community. Michael resides in Mankato, Kansas and Katrina lives nearby in Canton.

Richard worked in the oil field services for a number of years. During that time, Richard and his father, Melvin, ran a couple of small businesses in the Seiling area. Richard also served as the EMS coordinator as an EMT for the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribe before returning to college.

Richard enjoyed motorcycles and cars. From a Honda 75 to a Harley Roadster, Richard enjoyed hitting the road on a motorcycle. Hunting, fishing, music, traveling, and being outdoors were some of Richard's other favorite pastimes.

Richard grew up attending the Mennonite Indian Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church in Seiling. He and Tami later attended the Elm Grove Community Church in the Chester community.

Richard passed from this life on August 28, 2020. Preceding him in death is his father, Melvin Smith; father-in-law Larry Murray; and brother-in-law Gary Weston.

Richard is survived by his wife Tami Smith of the home. Ric and Amy Smith of the home, Michael and Danielle Smith of Mankato, Kansas, and Katrina Smith of Canton, Oklahoma. Richard also had three grandchildren whom he loved and adored, Acelyn, Aleigh and Tucker Snow of Taloga. Other survivors include his mother Norma Smith, sisters Verda Weston and her children Sean and Julianne Weston of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Patty Smith Hewitt and her husband Ronnie of Woodward, Oklahoma; Marilyn Morton and her husband Jerry of Woodward; and Carolyn Smith and her son Samual of Woodward and her daughter Desiree of Tulsa. Richard also has many cousins who are part of the extended family of Dana and May Black.

A wake will be held from 6 PM to 9 PM at the Seiling Community Building. Funeral services will be held at the Restoration Church in Seiling at 2 PM. Burial will follow at Brumfield Cemetery.
