Silas Enoch Peterman, 86, of Seiling, passed from this life on January 25, 2015. Silas was born on March 29, 1928 to James Avery and Lillie Mae (Straw) Peterman in the Little Robe area of rural Canton. He attended grade school in the Canton area, and then attended High School in Seiling. After school, Silas began a long military career with the Navy in 1948. During his 21 years of faithful service until 1977, Silas achieved the rank of C.P.O. (E-7) as a Chief Gunner's Mate. During his service, he was also awarded the Navy Unit Citation, five Good Conduct Medals, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, four Korean Service Medals, Navy China Service Medal, and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. It was during Silas' tour that he married the love of his life Mary Jane (Scott) in 1951 in San Diego, CA. In his spare time Silas enjoyed, hunting, fishing, and sharing Fleet Sea Stories with his buddies at the VFW and Fleet Reserve.
In addition to his parents, James and Lillie Peterman, Silas was preceded in death by his wife Mary J. Peterman; four brothers Melvin Peterman, Charles Peterman, Ernest Peterman, and Leonard Peterman; and two sisters, Pauline Pierce, and Lola Bateman.
Silas is survived by three step children, Ima Culver, James Saunders, and Betty J. Ricky, as well as seven nieces and seven nephews, including his caretakers, Wesley and Lou Ann Peterman.
In accordance with his wishes, Silas will be buried next to his wife at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue, WA, and a small family service will be held at the next Peterman Family Reunion in Taloga, OK. The Peterman family have entrusted his care to Luke Faires and the staff of Redinger Funeral Home.
